View Filters

I don’t really like view filters. I understand their benefits, like cache sharing, preventing SQL reexecution and the like, but I just can’t get into them. Same goes for prompt filters. I’m just partial to a well placed page by.

They are more relevant in MicroStrategy 9. With iCubes you can point a report to an iCube, and use the view filter to establish a prompt. This means that if you embed that report into a dashboard your user will be prompted, but the experience will be seamless to the end users. No SQL generated…in theory it will be fast. I think as you progress to 9 you should stay open to how view filters will make performance better…

The issue I have with view filters now, is I don’t have a lot of use for them due to the security setup of our organization. Everyone has access to different information, all set up with security filters, which means SQL level statement insertion…so view filters end up being useless because each person has their own cache.

I’ll have to look into that 9.0 thing soon here.

View filters are very useful if your users don’t have Web Professional license. It is the only way for them to filter the data using Web Analyst + OLAP license
